With a slogan like “we take the 'oo' out of poo” this company clearly has a sense of humor about the incredible work they do to create sustainable paper products. Since 2002, Poopoopaper has been all over the globe creating jobs and responsibly working with end cycle raw materials in its productions.
The poop they use from elephants, horses, cows, donkeys, and pandas contain huge amounts of fibrous materials due to their vegetarian diet. In addition to all the fibrous material, their digestive systems are relatively inefficient meaning that when they do poop, it has lots of intact fiber still included. Since one of the main materials used to make paper is fiber, this poop is perfect!
The poop is collected, rinsed, and boiled to create the pulp that is combined with about 15% other seasonal natural fiber like banana stock and corn husk which are all then boiled together. Once the paper pulp is ready, it is poured into a tray and set at an angle outside to dry naturally in the sun.
Poopoopaper has never cut a tree to make any of their products. Their company is an incredible example of recycling and sustainability by using actual waste to make their products. In addition to their work with natural waste, they have from their start donated to elephant welfare and conservation initiatives as well as environmental preservation organizations. They are committed to creating a working environment that is beneficial in every possibly way at every step of the process. They personally operate a manufacturing production in Thailand where over 95% of their employees are women who are able to work from home to provide additional income to their agriculturally dependent families. The fair wages, social security, and health benefits they provide their employees with shows their care for both the environment and the workforce.
